Once, there was a kind girl named Muntreng. She lived with her father. They were very happy. Then her father married a new wife. The mean mother was not kind at all. She did not like Muntreng. She was always mean to her.

The mean mother wanted Muntreng to go away. She had a mean plan. She sent Muntreng to the forest. "Find a big mushroom," she said. "It has a big cap and stem." Muntreng had to go alone. It was scary.

Muntreng felt very sad. She was scared. She walked into the dark forest. The trees were tall. She sang her sad song. "Muntreng, Muntreng, Muntreng. I need a big mushroom." Her song was soft and sweet. It echoed in the forest.

A small mushroom heard her song. "This way, please," it said. It pointed the way with its tiny cap. One more small mushroom helped. "Follow me," it said kindly. They were friendly mushrooms. They liked to help.

Muntreng followed the small mushrooms. Soon, she found the giant mushroom. It was very, very big. It was red and white. "Do not be afraid," it said. The mushroom prince said, 'I can help you.' He was under a spell. He wanted to be free. The spell was strong.

The prince carried Muntreng home. He was strong and gentle. He flew through the air. It was amazing. The mean mother was very surprised. She did not expect this. They had a happy meal. They ate rice and fish. The food was good. But the mean mother was still mean. She thought of a new plan.

The next day, the mean mother sent Muntreng out. "Find a big snake," she said. She hoped Muntreng would go away for good. She wanted Muntreng to never return. It was a bad plan.

Muntreng walked into the forest again. She sang her sad song once more. Small snakes heard her singing. They showed her the way. They slithered on the ground. Soon she found the giant snake. It was long and green. It looked scary but was kind.

The snake was big and kind. "Do not be afraid," it said. Its voice was deep. The mean mother saw the snake and was scared. She ran away and never came back. She was very afraid. She never came back.

The snake took Muntreng to his home. It was a safe place. It was a cave with flowers. It smelled nice. Muntreng felt safe with him. He was kind to her. He gave her food. Many years passed, and they were happy. Muntreng sold pretty flowers in the market. She made friends there. People liked her.

A handsome youth always bought her flowers. He gave her gold coins. He smiled at her. He was nice. Muntreng thought he might be the snake. She was curious. She wanted to know. One day, she had an idea. She pretended to go out. She watched him from a hiding place. She hid behind a tree. She saw him change from snake to man. It was magic. She was surprised.

Muntreng found his old snake skin. It was in his room. She found it easily. She burned it in a fire. This ended the spell. The fire was hot. The skin burned fast. The prince was now free. He was happy. He thanked Muntreng.

He came to Muntreng with a smile. "You saved me," he said. "Will you marry me?" Muntreng said yes, happy. She was joyful. She loved him.

They got married soon after. It was a big wedding. Everyone was happy. Being kind and never giving up can make good things happen. Being mean only brings trouble. And they were happy always. They lived in peace. They were kind always.

Muntreng

onon, ketika Daratan Jawa masih berupa hutan belantara, hiduplah seorang duda kaya

Ke, raya di sebuah desa dekat hutan. Duda tersebut hanya ditemani putn semata

wayangnya bernama Muntreng.

sang ayah menikah lagi.

sendiri, tetapi lambat laun kelihatan sifat aslinya. Setiap kali ayahnya pergi berdagang,

”Muntreng,” panggil ibu tirinya.

”Aaa..aa..ada apa, Mbok?" kata Muntreng ketakutan.

“Kamu tahu sayur yang diberi pakde penyabit rumput kemarin?”

"Tahu, Mbok,” jawab Muntreng.

orang sedesa," kata ibu tirinya tanpa perasaan. .

"Bukankah sebentar lagi hari gelap, Mbok? Banyak binatang buas di hutan sana.

Muntreng takut,” kata Muntreng.

Muntreng sangat

sedih, tetapi ia berusaha tegar. Untuk mengurangi kesedihannya, sepanjang jalan ia

bersenandung.

Muntreng...Muntreng...Muntreng!

Sayur jamur-sayur jamur

Tudungnya sepayung agung

Batangnya seglugu gemantung

Kegemaran ibu titi...!

Tiba-tiba ia mendengar suara lirih di rerumputan.

”Muntreng, Muntreng, kemarilah! Namaku jamur Cempaki, akulah yang kamu cari."

Muntreng terkejut, dicarinya sumber suara itu.

93

Muntreng hati-hati.

”Oalah Muntreng, Muntreng. Namaku saja jamur Cempaki, jamur kayu yang hanya

sebesar lidi, sedangkan tudungku hanya selebar kancing baju,” jawab jamur Cempaki.

"Aduh maaf kalau begitu, bukan kamu yang aku cari. Ibu tiriku minta jamur raksasa

”Terima kasih sahabatku jamur Cempaki.”

”Sama-sama Muntreng. Selamat jalan!”

Muntreng pun melanjutkan perjalanan sesuai arah yang ditunjukkan jamur Cempaki.

Sambil berjalan, ia kembali bersenandung,

Muntreng...Muntreng...Muntreng!

Sayur jamur-sayur jamur

Tudungnya sepayung agung

Batangnya seglugu gemantung

Muntreng meneruskan perjalanan memasuki hutan yang dikenal cukup angker. Jalma

mara jalma mati sato mara sato mati 'artinya siapapun yang berani memasuki hutan larangan

itu akan menemui ajal alias menjemput maut”. Muntreng kembali dikejutkan suara di pokok

kayu kering.

”Muntreng, Muntreng, akulah jamur yang kamu cari. Namaku Jamur Barat sangat

disuka seluruh rakyat...”

"Jamur Barat?

tudungmu?” tanya Muntreng.

“Batangku sejempol kaki dan tudungku selebar tatakan cangkir kopi,” jamur Barat

meneranj N

“Kalau begitu bukan kamu yang aku cari. Maaf ya sahabat Jamur Barat. Aku hanya

mencari jamur raksasa.”

“Baiklah Muntreng, tidak apa-apa. Aku hanya kasihan melihatmu. Berangkatlah ke

sarang jamur raksasa di bawah naungan mega berarak!” saran jamur Barat.

"Terimakasih atas infonya jamur Barat."

"Sama-sama Muntreng. Selamat jalan...!"

Muntreng dan jamur Barat saling memberi hormat. Sebagai perintang waktu Muntreng

terus bersenandung.

Tampak mega berarak

membentuk bayangan tubuh raksasa. Muntreng agak ketakutan. Tiba-tiba muncul angin ribut

meluluh-lantakkan pohon-pohon di sekitar Muntreng.

”Ha...ha...ha...Muntreng jangan takut. Akulah jamur yang kamu cari. Jamur raksasa

berbatang seglugu gemantung, bertudung sepayung agung. Jangan ragu tebaskan belatimu ke

semak-semak di depanmu tiga kali. Kamu akan menemukanku!”

94

Muntreng gemetar, tetapi memberanikan diri menebas gerumbul perdu liar,

crak...crak...crak!

Muntreng. Muntreng serta merta menangis.

”Lo...lo...lo kenapa menangis arek ayu?" tanya jamur raksasa heran.

membawa tubuh mungil Muntreng pulang. Ibu tirinya sangat terkejut melihat Muntreng

berhasil membawa jamur raksasa. Pesta pun digelar selama tujuh hari tujuh malam.

Ia

memikirkan cara lain untuk membunuh Muntreng. Kebetulan pada suatu hari ia mendapat

hantaran sayur belut dari pakde penyabit rumput. Sayur belut itu dikatakan ibu tirinya sebagai

sayur ular.

“Hai Muntreng!” kata ibu tirinya sambil berkacak pinggang memperlihatkan wajah

bengis.

Muntreng ketakutan, jangan-jangan ibu tirinya akan memberi tugas berat lagi

kepadanya.

"Ada apa, Mbok?”

”Kamu tahu apa yang diberikan Pakde penyabit rumput kemarin sore?”

"Iya, Mbok. Sayur belut,” jawab Muntreng sambil menunduk.

"Enak saja sayur belut! Itu bukan sayur belut tapi sayur ular. Kali ini aku ingin membuat

pesta dengan lauk sayur ular. Carilah ular raksasa di hutan.”

"Tapi, Mbok..."

“Tidak ada tapi. Jangan membantah. Cepat pergi. Ini glathi pangot 'pisau karatan”.

Awas, jangan pulang sebelum kamu dapatkan ular raksasa. Besar tubuhnya seglugu jambe,

kepalanya sekenong, matanya seukuran gong,” kata ibu tirinya sambil memberikan pisau

karatan.

Dengan hati sedih, Muntreng meninggalkan rumah menuju hutan belantara. Ia tidak tahu

ke mana harus mencari ular raksasa itu. Untuk mengurangi kesedihan hatinya, Muntreng pun

bersenandung.

Muntreng,muntreng, muntreng

Sayur ular-sayur ular

Tubuhnya seglugu jambe

Kepala sekenong, mata seukuran gong

Kegemaran ibu tiri

“Muntreng, Muntreng, bangunlah cah ayu.”

Muntreng mengerjap-ngerjapkan mata, dipandanginya sekeliling. Tiba-tiba ia melihat

seekor ular kecil sebesar jari kelingking.

”Maaf sahabat, siapa namamu?” tanya Muntreng agak takut.

gong,” kata Muntreng menjelaskan.

”Sama-sama, Muntreng.""

Muntreng pun melanjutkan perjalanan. Ia tidak memedulikan kaki rampingnya

berlumuran darah akibat menginjak semak berduri di sepanjang perjalanan. Ia kembali

bersenandung.

Muntreng, muntreng, muntreng

Sayur ular-sayur ular

Tubuhnya seglugu jambe

Kepala sekenong, mata seukuran gong

Kegemaran ibu tiri

persembunyian ular jenis kobra.

tubuhmu?”

"Namaku saja ular Kayu, Muntreng. Tubuhku sebesar jempol kaki orang dewasa dan

panjangku satu setengah depa,” jawab ular Kayu.

"Kalau benar, maaf sahabat. Bukan kamu ular yang aku cari. Baiklah terima kasih, aku

akan melanjutkan perjalanan.”

”Selamnat jalan Muntreng. Carilah tempat mega berarak di utara timur," saran ular Kayu

sebagaimana keterangan yang diberikan oleh ular Tampar. Muntreng bergegas ke arah yang

ditunjukkan ular Kayu. Ia pun bervenandong:

Muntreng-muntreng, muntreng

96

Sayur ular-sayur ular

Tubuhnya seglugu jambe

Kepala sekenong, mata seukuran gong

Kegemaran ibu tiri

berguncang. Muncul bau anyir seiring dengan terdengarnya bunyi mendesis-desis.

”Gog...gog...gog, wussh...wussh...wussh! Muntreng akulah ular yang kamu cari.

Narnaku kang ulo gedhe”Tubuhku seglugu jambe, kepalaku sebesar kenong, dan mataku

sebesar gong.

dipunyai.

”Gog...gog...gog, wussh...wussh...wussh!”

” Mbok, aku pulang. Ini aku bawakan ular raksasa,” kata Muntreng gembira.

Ibu tirinya tergopoh-gopoh menyongsong Muntreng. Tetapi belum sempat berkata-kata,

"Jangan takut Muntreng. Memang sudah sepantasnya perempuan jahat seperti ibu tirimu

itu mendapat pelajaran. Sekarang ikutlah denganku.”

Muntreng pun mengikuti kata-kata kang ulo gedhe dan secepat kilat ia bersama raja ular

terbang ke arah barat. Ia tinggal bersama ular raksasa.

kini Muntreng hidup serba berkecukupan.

kebun belakang rumah Muntreng.

i dapur” 3

Tanpa

menunggu waktu, Muntreng langsung membakarnya hingga tak tersisa. Api membubung

cukup tinggi disertai asap hitam tebal memenuhi langit pagi.

”Nah Muntreng, begitulah kisahku. Aku ingin kamu menjadi pendamping hidupku.

sampai akhir hayat.

An unnatural, thick mist clings to the ground, swirling around clusters of bioluminescent mushrooms in eerie blues and sickly greens. Shadowy, indistinct shapes of wild animals lurk just beyond sight in the deep gloom. The air is heavy and silent, pierced only by the distant, unsettling call of an unseen creature. The entire scene is painted in deep emerald, charcoal, and violet hues, with faint, ominous glows from the fungi providing the only light. no border, no frame, no watermark, no text, no signature, edge-to-edge illustration.
