They lived in a happy land. A kind king ruled there.

They loved each other. But a bad man, Demang Dukoro, liked Jinggosari.

Demang Dukoro told a lie. He said Mercuet stole a special jar.

His helpers put the jar in Mercuet's home. "Look! Mercuet is bad!"

Mercuet was hurt by the lie. He was sad and hurt.

But Mercuet was strong. He survived and went home to his wife.

"Jinggosari, we must go," said Mercuet. "We must run to a safe place."

They ran away. They hid in Alas Purwo.

In Alas Purwo, Mercuet told Jinggosari the truth. "The bad man lied," he said.

"I must learn to be strong," said Mercuet. "I will learn to be brave."

He kissed his wife goodbye. He left to practice and learn.

Mercuet practiced for a long time. He worked very hard.

He became very strong and brave. He got special gifts and became Kebo Mercuet.

Kebo Mercuet came back to Alas Purwo. He looked for his kin.

But the little home was empty. His kin was gone. He felt worried.

He went to ask the king, "Do you know where my wife is?"

The king, Adipati Mirudo, said, "I do not know. I am sorry."

Kebo Mercuet was upset. But he did not hurt anyone. He learned the truth.

The king's son, Haryo Simping, saw all. He went to tell others what happened.

Helpers came to the land. But Kebo Mercuet was gone.

The helpers made the son the new king. It was a fresh start.

Menak Koncar

Praboto. Adipati Mirudo mempunyai seorang putra bemama Haryo Simping.

Kadipaten Lumajang terdiri atas beberapa kademangan, antara lain Kademangan

Yosowilangun, Kadernangan Klakah, Kademangan Ranuyoso, Kademangan Pasrujambe.

Setiap kali melihat perempuan

cantik, ia akan mengambilnya sebagai selir. Kecantikan Jinggosari membuat Demang Dukoro

kasmaran dan ingin segera mengambilnya sebagai selir. Akan tetapi, Jinggosari sudah

memiliki suami sehingga Demang Dukoro haris memikirkan cara untuk menyingkirkan

Suaminya, Dengan bantuan dua orang cantriknya, Demang Dukoro membuat rencana licik

pulang. Ia hampir terjatuh saat membuka pintu rumahnya. Jinggosari berlari mendapati

suaminya dan dengan cemas bertanya.

“Kakanda, apa yang terjadi? Kakanda tidak mencuri perhiasan Demang Dukoro kan?”

”Adinda...segeralah berkemas. Kita harus meninggalkan kademangan ini secepatnya.

Cepatlah, Dinda...” Tanpa mempedulikan pertanyaan dan kecemasan istrinya, Mercuet

menyuruh Jinggosari segera berkemas.

”Tapi...tapi...mengapa kita harus pergi? Apa...apa...yang terjadi? Mengapa Demang

ingin mencelakai Kakanda?" tanya Jinggosari tidak mengerti. Ia masih belum tahu apa yang

terjadi. Pagi-pagi tadi dua cantrik Demang Dukoro menuduh suaminya mencuri dan

membawanya pergi dengan paksa.

25

secukupnya. Kita harus segera pergi sebelum cantrik demang mencariku lagi....cepatlah....”

Sambil menahan sakit, Mercuet kembali menyuruh istrinya segera berkemas.

membalas dendam kepadanya beserta dua orang cantriknya,

”Dinda...tampaknya Demang Dukoro menginginkan Dinda menjadi selirnya. Demang

sengaja menjebakku, Dinda. Aku tidak pemah mencuri perhiasannya. Semua itu fitnah yang

telah direncanakan untuk menyingkirkanku.” Mercuet memulai ceritanya sambil menatap

wajah istrinya yang terlihat sangat lelah. Kekejaman demang yang dilakukan lewat perantara

cantriknya itu diceritakan semua kepada Jinggosari.

"Kejahatan Demang Dukoro harus segera diakhiri. Kasihan rakyat dan perempuan yang

menjadi korban kerakusannya. Dinda..., Kakanda harus memperdalam ilmu agar dapat

mengalahkan demang.

Atas keteguhan hati Mercuet, para Dewa berkenan menghadiahi wahyu berupa kotak

godaan, maka sudahilah tapamu. Gunakanlah ilmumu untuk membela kebenaran. Saya akan

memberimu dua buah senjata, yaitu pedang Sukonyono dan gada besi kuning. Pc

Mulai sekarang

namamu menjadi Kebo Mercuet.”

Sang pendeta kemudian meninggalkan

pertapaannya menuju Alas Purwo.

Sang pendeta kemudian

mengubah nama Joko Umbaran menjadi Bambang Menak.

sehingga kemarahannya pun bertambah. Adipati Mirudo dan para abdinya dibunuh. Putra

Setelah

mendengarkan penuturan Haryo Simping, Prabu Brawijaya segera menyuruh Patih Logender

Patih Logender segera memakamkan Adipati Mirudo

dan selanjutnya mewisuda Haryo Simping menjadi Adipati Lumajang menggantikan ayahnya

dengan gelar Menak Koncar.
