Once, a king lost his home. His name was Mayang. He ran to a forest with two friends. They were safe in the forest.

Mayang got hurt. His friend Sade helped him. He found special plants. The plants made the king better. The king went to a pretty lake. He sat and thought by the water. He wanted to get strong again.

In a new kingdom, there was a king. His name was Prabu. He had a kind daughter. Her name was Naga. A new king, Nila, wanted to marry her.

Prabu was sad. He did not want to lose his daughter. Naga was brave. She had a plan. "You must clear a big forest," she said. "Then you can marry me."

Nila tried to clear the forest. He tried with many people. He could not do it. He went to a wise man. The wise man was Ki Seger. He asked Ki Seger for help.

Mayang also went to Ki Seger. He wanted to learn from him. He traveled to the wise man's home.

With Ki Seger's help, Nila cleared the forest. But Naga saw he cheated. She did not like him. She liked Mayang instead.

Naga ran to Mayang. Nila got very angry. He was very, very mad.

Mayang hid Naga in a cave. He tried to stop Nila. He was pushed back at first. He did not give up.

Ki Seger gave Mayang two magic gifts. "Use these," said Ki Seger. "Be strong."

Nila asked his teacher for help too. He turned into a big snake. He ran away to the sea.

Mayang used his magic gifts. He shot an arrow. The arrow hit the snake. The snake stopped.

The snake's body turned into a big stone. People called it Watu Ulo, the Snake Stone. It was a happy sign. Good things happen when you are kind.

Dinasti Sanjaya mengalami keruntuhan akibat pemberontakan. Raja yang berkuasa

pada waktu itu bernama Mayang Kusuma. Karena mengalami kekalahan, Mayang

Kusuma melarikan diri dengan ditemani oleh dua orang pembantunya. Sampailah mereka di

hutan yang sangat lebat bernama Hutan Roban.

“Paman, berhentilah sejenak, di hutan ini tidak ada musuh yang berani mengejar kita,”

kata Mayang Kusuma kepada kedua pengikutnya.

“Baiklah Gusti, kita beristirahat sejenak.”

“Luka Gusti cukup parah, hamba akan mencarikan tumbuh-tumbuhan yang dapat

menyembuhkan luka Gusti. Di hutan ini tentu banyak jenis tumbuhan yang bisa

dimanfaatkan.”

“Terima kasih, Paman.”

Mayang Kusuma diobati oleh Sadengan sampai sembuh seperti sediakala. Setelah cukup

lama beristirahat, mereka pun melanjutkan perjalanan merambah hutan. Di tengah-tengah

hutan tersebut, mereka menemukan sebuah telaga bernama Telaga Sarangan.

“Paman, tempat ini cukup bagus dan asri untuk melakukan pertapaan. Untuk

memulihkan tenagaku, aku akan melakukan tapa di telaga ini paman.”

“Baiklah Gusti, apa pun yang Gusti lakukan, hamba berdua akan selalu menemani dan

mengabdi pada Gusti Prabu.”

Alkisah ada kerajaan bemama Suksma Ilang. Kerajaan itu dipimpin oleh seorang raja

bemama Prabu Sukmayana. Raja Suksma Ilang mempunyai tiga orang putri cantik. Ketiga

putri ini memiliki sifat yang baik hati dan berbakti kepada orang tuanya. Salah satu putri itu

bernama Dewi Nagasari.

Suatu hari, datang lamaran Raja Nila Taksaka dari kerajaan Nusa Barong yang isinya

ingin meminang putri Prabu Sukmayana yang bernama putri Nagasari. Hal ini membuat Raja

Sukmayana bersedih karena tidak tahu jawaban apa yang harus diberikan kepada Raja Nila

Taksaka.

“Mohon ampun Ayahanda, apa kiranya yang membuat Ayahanda bersedih, Ananda

melihat, Ayahanda bermuram durja, sekiranya Ananda boleh mengetahuinya?”

“Ayahanda bersedih menerima lamaran Raja Nila Taksaka yang menginginkan salah

satu di antara kalian, sedangkan Ayahanda tidak menginginkan Ananda berpisah satu sama

lain, Ayahanda menyayangi kalian,” kata Prabu Suksmayana kepada putri-putrinya.

“Ayahanda, di antara kami, siapakah yang diinginkan oleh Raja Nila Taksaka?

“Engkau Dewi Nagasari, Anakku.”

“Baiklah Ayahanda, Ananda bersedia menerima lamaran Raja Nila Taksaka, tetapi

dengan satu syarat ia harus mampu membuat atau membuka jalan di Hutan Puger”.

“Engkau memang anak yang baik dan berbakti kepada orang tua. Baiklah Ananda,

Ayahanda akan segera membuat surat balasan kepada Raja Nila Taksaka.”

P ada zaman dahulu, diceritakan kurang lebih abad ke-6, kerajaan Mataram di bawah

Keesokan harinya, Raja Suksmayana mengutus salah satu patihnya untuk mengantarkan

surat balasan ke kerajaan Nusa Barong.

“Paman, berangkatlah sekarang, antarkan surat balasan ini kepada Raja Nila Taksaka di

kerajaan Nusa Barong.”

“Baiklah Paduka, hamba akan segera melaksanakan perintah Paduka.”

Dengan ditemani beberapa pengikutnya, patih kerajaan Suksma Ilang bergegas menuju

kerajaan Nusa Barong. Tidak beberapa lama tibalah utusan kerajaan Suksma Ilang di kerajaan

Nusa Barong.

“Apa gerangan yang membuat Paman datang ke sini?”

“Daulat Tuanku, hamba mengantarkan surat ini kepada Paduka Raja.”

“Ooo, surat balasan dari Raja Suksma Ilang.”

“Benar sekali, semoga Tuanku tidak keberatan, hamba mohon pamit untuk kembali ke

Suksma Ilang.”

“Baiklah Paman, sampaikan salamku kepada Paduka Raja Suksmayana.”

Sepeninggal utusan dari kerajaan Suksma Ilang, Raja Nila Taksaka bergegas membuka

surat balasan dari Raja Suksmayana.

“Lamaranku diterima, betapa senangnya hatiku Paman, Aku akan memperistri salah satu

putri Raja Suksmayana yang cantik itu, ha...ha... ha....Tetapi bagaimana dengan persyaratan

yang diajukan Putri Nagasari, Paman?”

“Paduka Raja jangan khawatir, kami dan pasukan kerajaan akan membantu Paduka

untuk membabat Hutan Puger."

“Baiklah Paman, mari segera kita lakukan.”

Dengan mengerahkan rakyat Nusa Barong, Raja Nila Taksaka dengan semangat gotong

royong membabat Hutan Puger. Akan tetapi, sampai waktu yang telah ditentukan, Raja Nila

Taksaka belum berhasil melaksanakan syarat yang telah diajukan Putri Nagasari. Raja Nila

Taksaka pun pergi ke Gunung Putih minta pertolongan kepada Ki Seger untuk membabat

Hutan Puger.

Di Telaga Sarangan, Mayang Kusuma masih bertapa. Setelah mendapatkan petunjuk,

barulah Raja Mayang Kusuma dan kedua pengiringnya melanjutkan perjalanan. Akhimya

mereka tiba di Gunung Putih untuk berguru kepada Ki Seger. Di sisi lain, Prabu Nila Taksaka

juga ingin berguru kepada Ki Seger. Prabu Nila Taksaka minta bantuan kepada pendeta

supaya membuka Hutan Puger. Dengan bantuan pendeta, Prabu Nila Taksaka berhasil

memenuhi syarat yang diajukan Putri Nagasari. Akan tetapi, putri Nagasari mengetahui

kelicikan Prabu Nila Taksaka, Putri malah jatuh cinta pada Mayang Kusuma.

Prabu Nila Taksaka sangat murka ketika tahu putri-putri prabu Sukmayana sudah

melarikan diri. Putri Nagasari lari ke arah barat dengan tujuan minta bantuan kepada Mayang

Kusuma. Setelah menyembunyikan Putri Nagasari di dalam goa, Mayang Kusuma bertempur

dengan Prabu Nila Taksaka. Mayang Kusuma dapat dikalahkan oleh Prabu Nila Taksaka,

tetapi kemudian ditolong oleh Ki Seger. Dengan membawa dua pusaka pemberian Ki Seger,

Mayang Kusuma maju berperang lagi. Mengetahui hal itu, Prabu Nila Taksaka pun minta

bantuan gurunya. Setelah mendapat kesaktian dari gurunya, ia mengubah diri menjadi ular

naga dan melarikan diri ke arali laut. Secepat kilat, Mayang Kusuma melepaskan anak

panahnya dan tepat mengenai kepala naga itu hingga hancur. Badan ular jelmaan Prabu Nila

Taksaka itu berubah menjadi batu sehingga disebut batu ular atau watu ulo (Iw).
