Long ago, there is a pretty princess. She lives in a big palace. But she is not happy. She is very sad.
The Princess has a best friend. His name is Wirabaya. He is kind. He is brave. They like to talk. They like to laugh. But the King does not want this.
The King is very angry. He says, "No! You must stay here." He says, "You cannot see him." The Princess is sad. She wants to see her friend. She sits and waits. She waits and waits.
But Wirabaya is brave. One night, he comes. He comes to the palace. A kind helper opens the door. "Come, Princess," he says. "I am here." The Princess smiles. "Thank you," she says. And they go into the night.
They walk and walk. They go through big trees. They go up a hill. They go down a hill. They cross a stream. The Princess is tired. Wirabaya helps her. "Do not be sad," he says. "I am here." She smiles.
But the King sends a strong man. His name is Wirasura. He must bring her back. He walks fast. He looks and looks. He finds them by the river. "Come back now!" he says.
Wirabaya says, "No! She is my friend. I will not let her go."
And then a great thing happens. Wirasura is very strong. Wirabaya is very strong too. They are so strong, they change! Wirasura turns into a big shark. Sura the shark! And Wirabaya turns into a crocodile. Baya the crocodile! It is like magic.
Sura and Baya go to the river. Splash! Splash! The water goes all around! Splash! Splash! People come to see. "Look!" they say. "A shark and a crocodile!" Splash! Splash! The water flies up high. It flies so high! It falls back down.
But then they are very tired. They stop. Sura the shark looks at Baya. Baya the crocodile looks at Sura. They are not angry now. They are still. "I will guard the sea," says Sura. "I will guard the river," says Baya. And they are friends again.
Sura and Baya. Sura-Baya! That is the city name. Sura the shark. Baya the crocodile. Sura-Baya! Even today!

Asal Usul Surabaya
ada zaman dahulu, kerajaan Singosari dipimpin oleh Raja Prabu Kertanegara. Wilayah
kekuasaannya sangat luas. Prabu Kertanegara memiliki beberapa orang putri dari
permaisuri dan para selirnya. Salah seorang putrinya jatuh cinta pada seorang pemuda
dari kalangan rakyat biasa bernama Wirabaya. Pada mulanya, percintaan mereka dilakukan
secara sembunyi-bunyi. Tetapi, lama-kelamaan hubungannya diketahui oleh Prabu
Kertanegara dan permaisurinya.
Sang ratu memanggil putrinya untuk dinasihati bahwa apa yang dilakukannya
merupakan kesalahan karena tidak sepantasnya seorang putri raja menjalin hubungan cinta
dengan pemuda dari kalangan rakyat jelata. Sang putri menolak permintaan permaisuri untuk
memutuskan hubungannya dengan Wirabaya. Meskipun sudah dibujuk dengan berbagai cara,
sang putri tetap bergeming, bahkan dengan berani mengutarakan keinginannya untuk hidup
bersama Wirabaya. Hal itu membuat permaisuri marah sehingga melaporkannya pada Prabu
Kertanegara.
Prabu Kertanegara segera mengadakan rapat kerajaan untuk membahas persoalan
hubungan putrinya dengan Wirabaya. Dalam rapat itu diputuskan memberikan hukuman
penggal kepala untuk sang putri yang dianggap mbalelo. Hukuman akan dilakukan di muka
umum di tengah Alun-alun Baluwerti (sekarang bernama Baliwerti) dengan tujuan
memberikan pesan kepada keluarga kerajaan khususnya dan rakyat Singosari pada umumnya
agar tidak menolak perintah rajanya. Siapa saja yang melanggar perintah raja akan dihukum,
bahkan putri sendiri pun tidak lepas dari hukumari itu,
Berita akan dihukumnya sang putri dengan cepat tersebar ke seluruh wilayah Singosari.
Wirabaya pun mendengar berita tersebut, Ia sangat terharu oleh keteguhan cinta sang putri
terhadap dirinya hingga nyawa pun dipertaruhkan demi mempertahankannya. Karena rasa
cinta yang besar juga kepada sang Putri, Wirabaya memeras otak memikirkan bagaimana
caranya membebaskan sang putri dari hukuman tersebut. Semalam suntuk Wirabaya tidak
tidur memikirkan nasib sang putri. Pada malam berikutnya, Wirabaya diam-diam menuju
pusat kerajaan Singosari mencari tahu tempat sang putri disembunyikan. Atas bantuan
seorang dayang sang putri yang setia, Wirabaya dapat mana sang putri dan membawanya
lari meninggalkan keraton.
"Tuan Putri...,” kata Wirabaya setelah berhasil masak ke tempat disembunyikannya sang
putri.
”Ka...ka...kang Wirabaya? Bagaimana Kakang bisa masuk ke tempat ini?" tanya sang
putri terkejut bercampur takut dan senang.
"Dayang Tuan Putri yang membantuku. Tapi kita tidak punya banyak waktu untuk
bicara. Nanti hamba ceritakan. Sekarang, mari... Tuan Putri, kita pergi sebelum para pengawal
datang,” jawab Wirabaya sambil meraih tangan sang putri.
”Baiklah, Kakang. Aku akan ikut kemana pun Kakang pergi,” jawab sang putri
mengikuti langkah Wirabaya.

Wirabaya membawa lari sang putri ke arah selatan, yaitu menuju kerajaan Jenggala.
Tanpa merasa lelah, mereka terus berlari menembus malam dan hutan belantara yang lebat
dengan harapan sampai di Jenggala sebelum keluarga kerajaan menyadari sang putri telah
dibawa lari. Demi cintanya pada Wirabaya, sang putri tidak memikirkan keadaan dirinya, rasa
lelah, lapar, dan dahaga tiada dihiraukan. Wirabaya merasa sangat terharu melihat
pengorbanan sang putri untuk dirinya hingga rasa cintanya kian besar dan kian besar pula
tekadnya untuk menyelamatkan sang putri dari hukuman. Sesekali Wirabaya menggendong
sang putri manakala sang putri sudah terlihat sangat lelah.
Di sisi lain, pagi-pagi seorang dayang tergopoh-gopoh menghadap Sang Permaisuri
melaporkan bahwa tuan putri tidak ada di dalam kamarnya. Sang Ratu diiringi seorang
dayang bergegas menuju kamar sang putri yang telah kosong. Sang dayang, yang
sesungguhnya telah membantu sang putri melarikan diri dengan Wirabaya, mengarang cerita
bahwa pada malam itu tertidur oleh ajian sirep yang digunakan oleh sang pencuri. Ia tidak
menyadari dan tidak mengetahui apa pun yang terjadi di dalam kamar sang putri. Ia baru tahu
bahwa sang putri tidak ada ketika dibangunkan oleh seorang prajurit jaga yang melihat
jendela kamar sang putri terbuka. Sang Permaisuri percaya pada penuturan dayangnya karena
dayang itu merupakan salah satu dayang kepercayaan kerajaan. Ia sudah mengabdi sangat
lama dan sangat setia pada kerajaan.
Sang Ratu segera membangunkan Prabu Kertanegara dan menceritakan apa yang terjadi.
Sang Ratu menduga bahwa yang membawa lari tuan putri bukanlah seorang penculik biasa,
tetapi kekasihnya, yaitu Wirabaya. Meskipun berasal dari kalangan biasa, Wirabaya' juga
terkenal memiliki kesaktian yang luar biasa berkat olah kanuragan dan pendidikan
keprajuritan yang diikutinya di sebuah perguruan. Setelah bermusyawarah dengan permaisuri.
dan beberapa staf kerajaan, Prabu Kertanegara mengutus Patih Wirasura dan beberapa
prajurit untuk mengejar dan mencari sang putri. Patih tidak boleh kembali sebelum berhasil
membawa pulang tuan putri.
Rombongan yang dipimpin Patih Wirasura itu segera meninggalkan pusat kerajaan
menuju ke arah selatan sesuai dengan petunjuk beberapa orang yang sempat melihat pelarian
sang putri. Karena menggunakan kuda, rombongan patih akhirnya berhasil menyusul
Wirabaya dan sang putri sebelum mereka tiba di kerajaan Jenggala. Di daerah persimpangan
(sekarang disebut Simpang) Mergayasa (jalan yang berjasa), Wirabaya dan sang putri sudah
dihadang oleh Patih Wirasura. Di persimpangan itu terjadi perdebatan mulut antara Wirasura
dan Wirabaya.
”Hai Wirabaya, lancang benar kau menculik putri paduka raja,” bentak Patih Wirasura
dengan mata melotot dan suara keras.
"Hamba tidak menculik tuan putri. Hamba ingin menyelamatkannya dari hukuman.
Tuan putri tidak bersalah," jawab Wirabaya sambil menggeser badannya melindungi sang
putri dari pandangan Patih Wirasura.
"Hai, pemuda desa. Jangan sok jadi pahlawan. Lihatlah siapa dirimu. Kau sudah masuk
ke dalam istana dan membawa lari tuan putri. Kau bilang apa? Menyelamatkan?" bentak
Patih Wirasura dengan nada emosi.
"Benar. Hamba tidak rela tuan putri mendapat hukuman hanya karena mencintai
hamba,” jawab Wirabaya.
"Kau benar-benar lancang. Lepaskan tuan putri atau kau akan kubunuh,” bentak Patih
Wirasura sambil menghunus pedangnya.

"Hamba tidak akan melepaskan tuan putri. Hamba rela mati demi cintai hamba pada
tuan putri,” jawab Wirabaya dengan tenang. Tangannya erat menggenggam tangan sang putri.
“Cinta? Dasar anak desa. Kau pikir siapa dirimu, berani mencintai tuan puti? Cepat
lepaskan tuan putri atau aku tidak akan mengampunimu,”" teriak Patih Wirasura sudah tidak
dapat menahan emosinya.
"Maaf, Patih. Hamba tidak akan pemah melepaskan tuan putri. Patih boleh membawa
kembali tuan putri ke istana jika tuan putri yang menghendaki, bukan karena paksaan,” jawab
Wirasura dengan nada meninggi.
"Aku tidak mau pulang. Aku akan ikut ke mana pun Kakang Wirabaya pergi,” tiba-tiba
sang putri menyela bicara.
”Nah, Patih, kau dengar apa kata tuan putri? Sekarang, biarkan kami pergi. Jangan
halangi kami lagi,” kata Wirasaba penuh kemenangan.
”Kau benar-benar lancang, Wirabaya. Kau telah berani melawan perintah raja,” jawab
Wirasura sudah tidak dapat menahan emosi.
Keduanya tidak ada yang mau mengalah. Wirasura menjalankan titah Prabu Kertanegara
untuk membawa kembali sang putri, sementara Wirasaba berusaha melindungi dan
mempertahankannya. Karena sama-sama kukuh mempertahankan pendiriannya, akhimya
terjadi pertarungan hebat antara Wirabaya dan Wirasura untuk memperebutkan sang putri.
Pertarungan hebat di Persimpangan Mergayasa itu kemudian bergerak ke arah Bubutan
(berasal dari kata rebut-rebutan). Di daerah Bubutan ini, Wirasura berhasil memegang tangan
sang putri, sedangkan Wirabaya berusaha tetap mempertahankannya sehingga terjadi rebutan
“tarik menarik' antara Wirasura dan Wirabaya. Pada satu ketika tangan Wirasura berhasil
memegang tuan putri dan membawanya lari kemudian Wirabaya berusaha mengejarnya dan
berhasil meraih sang putri. Wirasura kembali mengejar Wirabaya, maka terjadi kejar-kejaran
hingga ke dekat laut yang merupakan daerah rawa-rawa dengan hutan bakaunya yang
rimbun, Tempat terjadinya kejar-kejaran itu selanjutnya disebut Kenjeran hingga sekarang. Di
tempat ini Wirabaya berhasil merebut kembali sang putri. Tubuh sang putri terlihat sangat
lemas dan menderita. Demi keselamatan sang putri, Wirabaya kemudian menyembunyikan
tubuh sang putri di rawa-rawa hutan bakau agar tidak terlihat oleh Wirasura. Setelah merasa
aman, Wirabaya ke luar hutan bakau mencari Wirasura dan pertempuran hebat pun kembali
terjadi. '
Wirasura dan Wirabaya sama-sama mempunyai latar belakang ilmu olah kanuragan dan
kesaktian luar biasa. Wirabaya dapat menyelam lama di dalam sungai, sedangkan Wirasura
dapat bersembunyi di dalam laut. Kedua laki-laki perkasa itu terus bertarung tanpa henti
berhari-hari dengan seimbang, tidak ada yang lebih unggul atau lebih lemah. Berbagai ilmu
kanuragan dikeluarkan, tetapi keduanya tetap sama-sama kuat. Pada puncaknya, Wirasaba
dan Wirasura mengeluarkan ilmu kesaktiannya yang paling tinggi, yaitu menjelma menjadi
ikan. Wirasura berubah menjadi ikan hiu (sura), sedangkan Wirabaya menjelma menjadi
seekor buaya (baya).
Konon jasad Wirasura tertinggal di pantai dan hanyut terbawa air ke laut, sedangkan
jasad Wirabaya selalu dibawa oleh sang putri ke mana-mana mengikuti jalannya pertempuran
ikan sura dan baya.
Karena tidak dapat bertahan lama bertempur di laut (air asin), Wirabaya yang telah
menjelma menjadi buaya menggunakan taktik perang undur-undur, yaitu bertahan sambil
sesekali menyerang. Ikan Sura terpancing oleh strategi perang yang dimainkan oleh ikan

Baya, yaitu membawa pertempuran ke arah delta selatan masuk melalui sungai-sungai kecil,
yaitu Kalianyar, Kalisari, Kaliondo, dan berputar di Sungai Plampitan (dekat daerah Semut
sekarang). Perkelahian berlangung sangat sengit sehingga menarik perhatian masyarakat.
Orang-orang menonton di pinggir-pinggir sungai sambil bersorak-sorak menyaksikan
pertempuran yang seimbang. Air sungai berubah wamanya menjadi merah karena darah yang
keluar dari luka kedua ikan tersebut. Air sungai yang bercampur darah itu menyiprat ke
pinggir-pinggir sungai mengenai para penonton dan membuat sebuah jembatan menjadi
berwama merah (sampai sekarang dinamai Jembatan Merah).
Memasuki Sungai Plampitan, tenaga keduanya mulai berkurang sehingga pertempuran
melemah. Keduanya tidak dapat melanjutkan pertempuran dan terkulai lemas di pinggiran.
Bangkai ikan Sura tergeletak di atas bangkai ikan Baya. Bangkai itu dibiarkan tergeletak di
daratan sehingga dikerumuni semut yang sangat banyak. Sampai kini, tempat ditemukannya
bangkai ikan Sura dan ikan Baya yang dikerumuni semut itu dinamakan daerah Semut.
