Once upon a time, there was a prince. He lived in a village near the sea. He helped many people. They all loved the Prince.

One day, the Prince walked in a forest. The trees were tall. The moon was bright. Then he saw a lake. Pretty sky maidens danced by the water. Their dresses shone like stars. The Prince watched. He smiled. Then he saw a pretty scarf. He picked it up.

The sky maidens flew up into the sky. But one maiden stayed. She sat by the lake. She was very sad. She had no scarf. She could not fly home.

The Prince walked to her. "What is wrong?" he said. "I lost my magic scarf," she said. "I cannot fly home." Her name was Tanjung. "I can help you," the Prince said. "I will look for it."

The Prince and Tanjung looked and looked. They talked. They laughed. They became good friends. Then they became very happy.

The Prince and Tanjung had a little home. They had children. Tanjung had special magic. She put one grain in the pot. Then the pot made food for all. It was great magic. The children clapped and laughed.

But Tanjung had one rule. "Never look in the pot," she said. "Never look in the pot," she said again. "Never look in the pot."

One day, Tanjung went to the river. The Prince was alone. He looked at the pot. He wanted to see inside. He opened the lid. He saw one tiny grain of rice. Then the magic stopped. The grain stayed small. The Prince closed the lid. But it was too late.

Tanjung came home. She looked in the pot. The magic was gone. Tanjung was very sad. She sat down. Tears fell from her eyes.

Then Tanjung found her scarf. She held it tight. She felt light. She could fly again. She missed her home in the sky.

Tanjung hugged her children. She kissed them. "I love you," she said. "I must go now," she said. "Take care of our children." Then she flew up, up into the sky. She was gone.

The Prince was very sad. He missed Tanjung each day. But he loved his children. He took good care of them. He held them close each night.

The children grew up kind and strong. They helped many people. At night, they saw a bright star. They waved. "Hello, Mama," they said. And maybe, just maybe, the star twinkled back.

Aryo Menak Sanoyo

ada zaman dahulu, di sebuah dusun terpencil hiduplah seorang pemuda tampan. Ia

bemama Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo, putra bungsu Raja Majapahit dari selirnya yang

bemama Hendang Sasmitapura dari Gunung Ringgit, Lumajang. Semasa kecil, ia

dititipkan pada saudaranya yang menjadi Raja Palembang. Aryo Dillah namanya. Memasuki

usia dewasa, Aryo Menak Sanoyo diperintah ayahandanya mengembangkan pemerintahan

Majapahit di daerah Madura, tepatnya di daerah Proppo.

Kala itu, Madura masih berupa hutan lebat. Bermacam-macam binatang buas dan

berbisa berkeliaran di mana-mana. Pohon-pohon liar, semak belukar, dan rawa-rawa juga ada

di mana-mana. Sebelum menemukan tempat yang dituju, Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo mencoba

merambah hutan dan belukar yang ada di Madura sampai pada akhirnya, dia menemukan

tempat yang cocok untuk membangun daerah pengembangan pemerintahan Majapahit. Di

tempat itulah, Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo mengumpulkan para sesepuh dan pemuka adat untuk

membentuk suatu pemerintahan. Karena sifat-sifatnya yang bijaksana dan budi pekertinya

yang baik, dia diterima oleh masyarakat setempat. Akhirnya, dia diangkat sebagai sesepuh

dan penguasa di tempat itu. Karena tempat itu merupakan perkumpulan para seppuh (seppuh

dalam bahasa Madura - seppo), tempat itu kini dikenal dengan nama Desa Proppo.

Pada suatu malam, Aryo Menak Sanoyo tersesat di dalam hutan. Ia beristirahat di bawah

pohon besar. Karena merasa lelah, dia tidak mampu menahan hawa ngantuk. Ketika matanya

hampir terlelap, dia mendengar suara gadis-gadis sedang bersenda gurau. Ketika itu tepat

pada purnama keempat belas. Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo mengendap-endap mendekati sebuah

telaga (Empang Sarasido), tempat gadis-gadis sedang bersenda gurau. Di telaga tersebut ada

beberapa gadis sedang mandi. Kecantikan dan kemolekan tubuh para gadis yang sedang

menikmati malam purnama itu memancar karena terkena cahaya bulan yang kemilau.

Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo berjalan berjingkat-jingkat mendekati telaga. Dia bersembunyi

di balik sebuah pohon besar. Kecantikan gadis-gadis itu membuat hati Aryo Menak Sanoyo

tergelitik untuk menggodanya. Dengan mengendap-endap, dia mengambil selendang milik

salah seorang gadis. Selendang tersebut kemudian disembunyikan dibalik bajunya. Ki Aryo

Menak Sanoyo rupanya belum merasa menggoda para gadis. Dia juga melempari telaga

dengan batu kecil. Gadis-gadis itu merasa terusik kesenangannya sehingga segera mengambil

bajunya dan terbang ke angkasa.

Betapa terkejutnya Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo ketika mengetahui bahwa gadis-gadis itu

tidak lain adalah bidadari yang turun dari kayangan, Dia melihat satu per satu bidadari itu

terbang ke angkasa. Seorang gadis menangis sendirian di tepi telaga, ditinggal saudara-

saudaranya kembali ke kayangan. Gadis itu tidak dapat terbang karena baju dan selendangnya

disembunyikan oleh Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo.

Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo mendekati gadis itu kemudian menyapanya dengan santun,

“Wahai Putri cantik, mengapa engkau menangis seorang diri di telaga ini?”

Bidadari itu tidak menyahut. Dia hanya menenggelamkan sebagian tubuhnya ke telaga.

Ia malu karena belum mengenakan busana. Setelah tinggal bagian leher dan kepala yang

terlihat, putri itu menjawab, “Aku ditinggal saudara-saudaraku kembali ke kayangan. Aku

tidak bisa kembali karena baju dan selendangku hilang... Apa..apakah Kakak bisa

membantuku?”

“Sebelum aku membantumu, bolehkan aku tahu siapa dirimu dan dari mana asalmu?”

tanya Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo.

“Na,,.na...namaku Ni Peri Tanjungwulan. Aku berasal dari kayangan. Tadi aku mandi di

sini dengan saudara-saudaraku. Tiba-tiba ada orang melempar telaga dengan batu kecil. Kami

tidak ingin diketahui manusia, jadi segera mengambil baju. Tapi...tapi...aku tidak bisa ikut

mereka karena baju dan selendangku tidak ada,” katanya sambil tertunduk sedih.

Mendengar penjelasan Tanjungwulan, Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo berlagak seperti seorang

pahlawan, katanya, “Aduh kasihan sekali putri yang cantik. Jika aku dapat membantu

mendapatkan selendangmu, apa kau mau berjanji padaku?"

“Apa pun permintaan Kakak akan saya turuti,” jawab Ni Peri Tanjungwulan pasrah.

Wajahnya masih memperlihatkan rasa sedih karena terpisah dari saudara-saudaranya.

“Benarkah? Kau tidak akan menyesal?” tanya Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo.

“Jika Kakak tahu di mana baju dan selendangku, cepat berikan padaku. Aku sudah tidak

tahan...dingin sekali...,” kata Ni Peri Tanjungwulan memohon.

“Tapi kau janji memenuhi permintaanku ya...sebentar aku cari dulu...,” kata Ki Menak

Sanoyo sambil beranjak dari tepi telaga. Ia berpura-pura mencari di semak-semak dan

pepohonan kemudian menjauh dari telaga. Ia mengambil baju dan selendang yang telah ia

sembunyikan sebelumnya. Dengan berpura-pura terkejut dan gembira, Ki Aryo Menak

Sanoyo bergegas menemui Putri Ni Peri Tunjungwulan yang sedang menanti dengan

perasaan cemas.

“Inikah baju dan selendangmu yang hilang?” tanya Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo sambil

memberikan pakaiannya kepada Tanjungwulan. Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo membalikkan

badannya sambil menjauh agar Ni Peri Tanjungwulan berani keluar dari telaga untuk

mengenakan bajunya.

“Terima kasih Kakak sudah membantuku. Sekarang, apa permintaan Kakak?” tanya Ni

Peri Tanjungwulan setelah selesai berpakaian.

“Begini...” kata Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo sambil menatap Ni Peri Tanjungwulan. “Aku

“Ta...ta...ta...pi...Kakak...,”

“Bukankah kau sudah berjanji akan memenuhi permintaanku. Selendang ini akan

kusimpan. Bukankah kau tidak akan bisa kembali ke kayangan tanpa selendang ini?”

“Ba...ba...baiklah Kakak. Aku bersedia menjadi istrimu dan ikut ke mana pun kau

pergi,” jawab Ni Peri Tanjungwulan menyerah karena tanpa selendang itu, ia memang tidak

akan bisa terbang kembali ke kayangan.

Singkat cerita, Ni Peri Tanjungwulan akhirnya menjadi istri Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo. Ia

hidup bahagia di daerah Proppo. Kehidupan keluarganya sangat tenteram, bahkan

pemerintahan di daerah Proppo semakin maju. Keadaan masyarakatnya makmur dan

pertanian sangat subur. Padi, jagung, dan ketela semakin banyak, bahkan lumbung-lumbung

padi semakin penuh termasuk lumbung padi miliki Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo. Kebahagiaan

semakin lengkap tatkala lahir dua anak, yaitu Aryo Pojok dan Ki Aryo Kedot.

Ni Peri Tanjungwulan memiliki keistimewaan yang tidak dimiliki wanita mana pun,

yaitu pada saat menanak nasi. Ia hanya membutuhkan sebutir gabah saja untuk mencukupi

kebutuhan keluarganya sehari-hari. Karena keistimewaan itulah, harta Ki Aryo Menak

Sanoyo semakin hari semakin menumpuk.

Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo sangat heran melihat kelebihan istrinya, tetapi tidak berani

bertanya karena istrinya selalu melarang dia masuk ke dapur dan membantunya memasak.

Pada suatu hari, Ni Peri Tanjungwulan hendak mencuci pakaian di sungai yang cukup jauh

dari rumahnya. Seperti biasa, Ni Peri Tanjungwulan berpesan kepada Ki Aryo Menak

Sanoyo.

”Kakanda, cucianku sangat banyak. Aku harus mencuci ke sungai. Selama aku pergi,

janganlah Kakanda mendekati dapur apalagi sampai membuka dandang tempatku menanak

nasi"

"Mengapa Dinda? Sungai itu cukup jauh, bagaimana kalau air dalam dandang habis

sebelum Dinda pulang? Nanti dandangnya gosong," tanya Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo terheran-

heran.

”Tidak...tidak..akan terjadi apa-apa. Percayalah pada Dinda. Janganlah Kakanda

mendekati dapur. Sekarang Dinda pamit ke sungai,” kata Ni Peri Tanjungwulan berlalu

sambil membawa rinjing penuh baju kotor.

"Baiklah Dinda," jawab Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo. Di dalam hatinya, Ki Aryo Menak

Sanoyo semakin penasaran, mengapa istrinya selalu melarangnya untuk membantu di dapur.

Setelah sekian lama memendam rasa ingin tahu, timbul niat untuk pergi ke dapur melihat-

lihat apa yang terjadi di sana.

Selagi istrinya masih di sungai, Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo pergi ke dapur, Ia ingin

mengetahui apakah nasinya sudah masak atau belum. Betapa terkejut Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo

ketika mengetahui bahwa istrinya hanya menanak sebutir beras saja. Dia langsung menutup

kembali kukusan di atas dandang yang dibukanya. Dia seolah-olah tidak pernah melihat apa-

apa dan kembali melajutkan aktivitasnya.

Selesai mencuci pakaian, Ni Peri Tanjungwulan segera menuju dapur. Ia ingin

mengetahui apakah nasinya sudah masak atau belum, Ia sangat terkejut ketika dilihatnya

sebutir gabah yang ditanaknya tidak berubah seperti biasanya. Hatinya sangat sedih. Ia yakin

bahwa suaminya telah mengetahui rahasia pribadinya. Pekerjaan berat mulai terbayang di

benaknya karena dari kejadian itulah dia harus bekerja seperti kebiasaan masyarakat pada

umumnya. Dia harus menumbuk padi terlebih dahulu jika ingin menanak nasi, Namun saat

bekerja, para pembantunya meringankan pekerjaan Ni Peri Tanjungwulan, majikannya.

Semakin hari, padi di lumbungnya semakin menipis.

Pada suatu hari, Ni Peri Tanjungwulan menemukan selendangnya di salah satu sudut

lumbung padinya. Hatinya sangat gembira. Dengan cekatan, ia mengambil selendang yang

terletak di balik tumpukan padi, lalu mencobanya. Seketika itu, ia merasa tubuhnya sangat

ringan. Tanpa sepengetahuan suaminya, ia melatih diri terbang dari pohon satu ke pohon yang

lainnya.

Setelah selendangnya ia temukan, timbul niat Ni Peri Tanjungwulan untuk kembali ke

kayangan berkumpul dengan keluarga yang sudah lama ditinggalkan, Ketika itu, Ki Aryo

Menak Sanoyo sedang menggendong Aryo Kedot, putranya. Ni Peri Tanjungwulan pergi

untuk berpamitan. Ia menjelaskan bahwa dirinya sudah lama mengabdi kepada Ki Aryo. Dia

juga telah lama mengabdi pada kehidupan manusia bahkan telah memberi keturunan. Anak-

anaknya kelak akan memerintah di Pulau Madura. Ia juga berpesan, ”Kakanda, jika nanti

anak-anakku menangis dan merindukanku, bawalah mereka ke tempat ini. Aku akan datang.”

”Dinda, benarkah kau akan meninggalkan Kanda dan anak-anak kita? Tidakkah Dinda

mencintaiku dan anak-anak kita?” tanya Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo sambil menggendong putra

bungsunya. Wajahnya terlihat sangat sedih.

”Kakanda, maafkan Dinda. Bukan Dinda hendak membuat Kakanda dan anak-anak

sedih, tapi takdir kebersamaan kita hanya sampai di sini. Kakanda sudah melanggar pesanku,”

kata Ni Peri Tanjungwulan.

"Ta..ta...ta..pi....”

”Kakanda jangan bersedih, tolong jaga dan rawat anak-anak kita. Dinda mohon pamit

kembali ke kayangan,” kata Ni Peri Tanjungwulan sambil melayang ke angkasa. Ia pergi

meninggalkan Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo yang berdiri terpaku menyesali perbuatannya

melanggar pesan istrinya.

Kini Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo merasa benar-benar ditinggal oleh istri tercintanya. Setiap

hari, dia harus mengasuh kedua putranya yang masih kecil. Tatkala putranya menangis, ia

membawanya ke tempat terakhir ia berpisah dengan istrinya. Di tempat itu, ia lalu meletakkan

putranya. Beberapa Jama kemudian, ia segera mengambilnya kembali. Konon, di tempat itu

Ni Peri Tanjungwulan masih sempat merawat putra-putranya sampai besar.

Diceritakan pula bahwa dari dua keturunan Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo yang tersisa

hanyalah Aryo Pojok, sedangkan Aryo Kedot meninggal sewaktu kecil. Ketika Aryo Pojok

memasuki usia dewasa, Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo merasa tidak kerasan di daerah Proppo.

Kenangan manis bersama Ni Peri Tanjungwulan sangat memilukan hatinya. Ia pun lalu

meninggalkan putranya seorang diri. Ki Aryo Menak Sanoyo pergi meninggalkan daerah

Proppo menuju Gunung Ringgit di Lumajang, tempat tinggal ibunya.

Singkat cerita, akhirnya Aryo Pojok menikah dengan salah satu keturunan Lembu

Peteng dari daerah Sampang. Putra-putra Aryo Pojoklah yanfakhirnya menjadi penguasa di

daerah Madura, khususnya Madura Barat.
