Grandfather was very old. His hands shook. His hair was white. He lived with his son.
Father and Mother lived there. The little boy did too. Grandfather loved the boy. He told him stories. He held his hand. The boy smiled at him.
But Father and Mother were busy. They were grumpy. "Sit over there," Father said. He gave Grandfather a small table. It was in the corner. Grandfather sat down. He ate from a little bowl. He ate all alone.
Grandfather looked at the big table. He saw Father and Mother. He saw the little boy. He was very sad. He missed them so much. He looked down at his food. He ate very slow.
One day, Grandfather held his bowl. His hands shook. The bowl slipped. It fell down. Crash! It broke on the floor. Small pieces went all around. Grandfather looked down. He felt bad. He was very sorry.
Mother looked at the broken bowl. She frowned. "Oh no," she said. Her voice was grumpy. She gave him a new bowl. It was made of wood. It was plain and hard. Grandfather held it. He said nothing. He just looked down.
The little boy watched. He watched Grandfather sit alone. He looked at the wood bowl. He felt sad for Grandfather. He was very quiet. He did not say a word.
One day, the boy sat down. He had small bits of wood. He put them on the floor. He worked and worked. He cut and shaped the wood. He was very busy.
Father saw the little boy. "What are you making?" he asked.
The little boy looked up. He smiled. "I am making a bowl," he said. "A bowl for you and Mama. For when you are old."
Father looked at Mother. Mother looked at Father. They were very quiet. Their eyes got wet. They felt very sorry. They looked at Grandfather. They felt bad.
Father went to Grandfather. He took his hand. "Come sit with us," he said. He led him to the big table. Mother gave him a nice bowl. A new, warm bowl. She smiled at him.
Grandfather smiled back. His eyes were bright. The little boy sat next to him. They all ate at the big table. The food was warm. It was good.
When Grandfather spilled, they helped. They smiled at him. No one was grumpy now. The little boy held his hand. He hugged Grandfather.
Each day, they ate as one. They were kind to Grandfather. They helped him and smiled. And Grandfather smiled and smiled.
