Janek was a kind pearl merchant in a busy town. He had a small, dark shop. His pearls were very good. They shone like little stars.

Janek was not rich. He wore old clothes. But he was very kind. He helped sad people. He gave them money. He gave them kind words.

Other merchants wanted his pearls too. They wanted to know his secret. But they could not find it.

One day, a Rich Merchant made a plan. He put up a sign. It said, "Find Janek's secret. Get a big prize. You can marry my daughter."

Many people tried to trick Janek. But Janek was smart. He did not tell them. He sold many pearls.

A young man named Saleb came. He loved the Merchant's Daughter. "I want to win the prize," he said. "I want to marry her."

Janek liked Saleb's honesty. "Come to my house tonight," he said.

That night, Saleb went to Janek's house. An Old Woman was there. She was crying. Janek sat with her. He said kind words to help her. Soon, she felt better and left.

Janek showed Saleb his pearls. "Look," he said. "These are not from the sea. They are tears."

Saleb looked at the pearls. "Tears?" he asked.

"Yes," said Janek. "Tears from happy feelings. Tears from sad feelings. Tears from deep inside the heart become pearls."

Saleb understood. "I will win the prize," he said.

Janek held the pearls. They fell through his fingers. "Listen," he said. "Being kind and helping others is best. That makes us truly happy."

Saleb listened. He would remember. Kindness was the best treasure.

JANEKIN IHMEELLISET HELMET.

Varmasti monet muullakin tavoin koettivat saada selville Janekin ihmeellisten helmien arvoituksen, mutta vaikka he olisivat koettaneet mitä, eivät he saaneet asiasta sen parempaa selkoa.

Eräänä päivänä, ensimmäisen innostuksen lauettua, kun Janek istui matollaan kauppakojunsa edustalla, auringon paisteessa, tuli nuori mies kohteliaasti tervehtien hänen luokseen.

— Taaskin onnenonkija, arveli Janek.

— Tulen pyytämään sinulta apua, sanoi nuorukainen samassa.

— Mistä on kysymys? sanoi Janek.

— Helmistä, sanoi nuorukainen heti, kuinka parhaiten saisin tietää, mistä ne saat?

— Puhutpa kiertelemättä, sanoi Janek.

— Tosin käyn suoraan asiaan, mutta en tiedä muuta neuvoa.

— Mikä on nimesi, kysyi Janek.

Saleb seisoi ääneti tuijottaen helmikokoja, kunnes Janek katkaisi hiljaisuuden.

— Voittaa rakastettuni! sanoi Saleb.
