The Okerlo
by Brothers Grimm · from Household Tales
Adapted Version
Once upon a time, there is a king. He is kind and old. He lives in a big castle. The castle is on a green hill. The King has a princess. She has a golden crown. The crown is very pretty. They are happy. Birds sing in the trees. Flowers grow in the garden. It is a good place.
But one day, something happens. A big creature lives in the forest. His name is the Okerlo. He is very big. He is very sad too. He has no friends. One night, he comes to the castle. He takes the golden crown! He runs back to his cave.
The Princess is sad. "My crown is gone!" she says. The King is sad too. "Who can help me?" he asks.
A boy lives in the village. He is young and brave. He hears the King. "I can help!" the Boy says. The King looks at him. "You are small," the King says. "But I am brave," the Boy says. The King nods. The Boy walks to the forest. He walks and walks.
The forest is big and dark. He sees tall trees. He hears birds sing. Then he finds a cave. The Okerlo sits inside. He holds the golden crown.
The Boy is not scared. "Hello," the Boy says. The Okerlo looks at him. No one talks to the Okerlo. "Why take the crown?" he asks.
The Okerlo looks down. "I am sad," he says. "I am alone." The Boy sits by him. "I can be your friend," the Boy says.
The Okerlo looks up. His eyes are big. "A friend?" he asks. "Yes!" the Boy says. "Please give back the crown." The Okerlo gives it back. "Thank you," the Boy says.
They walk to the castle together. The King sees them. The Princess sees her crown. "My crown!" she says. She is so happy. "Thank you!" she says to the Boy.
The King looks at the Okerlo. "You can stay with us," he says. The Okerlo smiles. He is not alone now. He has friends. The Boy is happy. The King is happy. The Princess is happy too.
Kind words can help anyone.
And they are all friends. The end.
