The Hand with the Knife
by Brothers Grimm · from Household Tales
Adapted Version
Lily had to carry firewood every day. The wood was big and heavy. Her arms were tired. Her back was sore. But her brothers? They played all day. Lily was sad. But she was brave.
A little elf lived in the forest. He lived inside a big rock. He was small and kind. He had a big smile. He saw Lily every day. He wanted to help.
One day, Lily walked past the rock. The little elf tapped the rock. A little door opened. He held out a basket. "This is for you," he said. "It will help." Lily put the wood inside. The wood felt light as a feather! "Thank you, friend!" Lily said.
Every day, Lily used the magic basket. The heavy wood felt so light. She finished her work fast. She smiled and sang. Then she went to the big rock. She tapped three times. Tap-tap-tap. The little door opened. She gave the basket back. "Thank you, friend!" she said. The little elf smiled.
Mama saw Lily come home early. She was surprised. "How do you do that so fast?" Mama asked.
Mama called the brothers. "Go see how your sister finishes so fast," she said.
The brothers followed Lily. They were very quiet. They hid behind a big tree. They saw the big rock. They saw the little door open. They saw the kind elf. He gave Lily the magic basket. "Thank you, friend!" Lily said. The brothers watched with big eyes. They wanted that basket.
The brothers waited. Lily put the basket down. They took it. They ran away. Lily was so sad.
The brothers went to the big rock. They tapped three times. Tap-tap-tap. The little door opened.
The little elf saw the brothers. He did not see Lily. "This is ours now!" the brothers shouted. They grabbed the basket. The little elf was scared. He was so sad. He closed the little door.
Lily ran to the big rock. She tapped three times. Tap-tap-tap. The little door did not open. "I am sorry, friend," she said. But the elf did not come back. He thought she was not kind. Lily sat by the big rock. She put her hand on it. "I am sorry, friend," she whispered. The rock was quiet. The little door did not open. Lily walked home alone.
Original Story
The hand with the knife
A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm
There once lived a girl who had three brothers. The boys meant everything to their mother, and the girl was always put at a disadvantage and treated badly. Every day she had to go out to a barren heath to dig peat, which was used for cooking and heating. A dull old tool was all she had for that nasty work.
The little girl had an admirer, an elf who lived in a hill near her mother's house. Whenever she passed by that hill, the elf would stretch his hand out of a boulder and hold out a very sharp knife that had special powers and could cut through anything. She was able to dig out the peat quickly with that knife, go home with the required amount, and when she got to the boulder, she tapped on it twice. The hand would then reach out to take back the knife.
When the mother began to notice how quickly and effortlessly the girl brouhgt home the peat, she told the brothers that someone else had to be helping her with the work, otherwise it wouldn't be possible. The brothers stealthily followed her and saw how she got the magical knife, then caught up with her and forced her to give it to them. They headed back, struck the rock as the girl had done, and when the good elf stretched his hand out, they cut it off with his own knife. The bloody arm pulled back, and because the elf believed that his beloved had betrayed him, he was never seen again.
