Odds and Ends
by Brothers Grimm · from Household Tales
Adapted Version
Once there was a girl named Lina. She did not like to work. Lina had to make thread. But the thread had small knots. "This is too hard," Lina said. She threw the thread down. She threw away more and more. She sat and did nothing.
Another girl lived near Lina. Her name was Rosa. Rosa saw the thread on the ground. She picked up the thread. She cleaned the thread. She made the thread smooth and fine. Rosa worked and worked every day. Her hands were quick and strong.
Rosa used all the good thread. She made a dress from it. The dress was soft and golden. It shone in the sunlight. Rosa smiled at her new dress. She put it on and turned around. The dress moved like sunshine.
One day a kind king came. He came to the village. "I have a prize," he said. "I give it to the best worker." Lina heard this. She thought she would win.
Rosa put on her new dress. She danced at the village party. The dress moved and shone. She was so happy. They all looked at her and smiled. The king watched Rosa dance.
Lina saw Rosa dance. She did not like it. "Ha! That is my old thread!" Lina said. "That dress is from my scraps!" She laughed at Rosa. She pointed and laughed.
The kind king heard Lina. He walked to her. "What do you mean?" he asked. "Tell me more."
"I threw that thread away," Lina said. "It was too hard to use." Lina smiled a big smile. "Rosa just picked up my scraps." She was proud of this.
The king looked at Lina. Then he looked at Rosa. He saw the fine dress. He knew who worked hard.
The king walked to Rosa. He gave her the prize. "You worked hard," the king said. "You made something good." Rosa was very happy. She held the prize tight. She smiled and smiled.
Lina was sad. She looked at the ground. Then she looked up. "I will try harder," Lina said. And she did. She picked up thread. She started to work.
When you work hard, good things come.
Original Story
Odds and ends
A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm
There was once on a time a maiden who was pretty, but idle and negligent. When she had to spin she was so out of temper that if there was a little knot in the flax, she at once pulled out a whole heap of it, and strewed it about on the ground beside her. Now she had a servant who was industrious, and gathered together the bits of flax which were thrown away, cleaned them, span them fine, and had a beautiful gown made out of them for herself. A young man had wooed the lazy girl, and the wedding was to take place. On the eve of the wedding, the industrious one was dancing merrily about in her pretty dress, and the bride said,-
"Ah, how that girl does jump about, dressed in my odds and ends."
The bridegroom heard that, and asked the bride what she meant by it? Then she told him that the girl was wearing a dress make of the flax which she had thrown away. When the bridegroom heard that, and saw how idle she was, and how industrious the poor girl was, he gave her up and went to the other, and chose her as his wife.
